The Breather vs PowerBreathe: Complete Comparison

The Breather vs PowerBreathe: Complete Comparison

Airway physiotherapy focuses on respiratory issues and the respiratory system’s physiological activities. The goal is to strengthen the airways through stretching or manipulation. Breathing is improved by opening up airways, preventing congestion, and preventing coughing. Find out the comparison between The Breather vs PowerBreathe.

Let’s find out which one is most suitable to you and under what circumstances. Also, we will find out which one is easier to use and maintain. Let us begin with our comparison of The Breather with POWERbreathe.

What is The Breather?

The Breather

The Breather increases lung strength and capacity by increasing oxygen uptake to vital organs. The Breather® is not just used by patients with COPD, CHF, dysphagia, and neuromuscular diseases. It can also be used by anyone who wants to be healthier and feel their best as they age. It is possible to train both inspiratory and exhalatory muscles simultaneously with the dial control features.

Dysphagia patients can benefit from strengthening their expiratory muscles in order to improve their swallowing and coughing. Using The Breather®, athletes and healthy individuals improved their respiratory functions, heart rate, peripheral muscle strength, and exercise performance.

Scientists have discovered that Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST) activates the hyolaryngeal complex during swallowing, aiding in the protection of the airway and opening of the upper oesophagus.

How it works?

Breather simulates resistance breathing by activating and strengthening both the inspiratory and expiratory muscles. You can adjust the device to your needs using the knobs that are easy to read. There are six inhalation settings, one being the easiest and six being the most difficult, while there are five exhalation settings, one being the easiest and five being the most difficult. It is possible to change the settings separately.

How to use The Breather

The Breather

By strengthening both inhalation and exhalation muscles, the Breather RMT improves speech and swallowing. There are several ways to use it:

  • While sitting upright, hold the breather between your lips
  • Inhale and exhale using your diaphragm
  • The inhale and exhale dials should be adjusted so that you can breathe deeply for ten breaths without feeling out of breath or puffing up. There are 1-6 settings on the inhale dial, and 1-5 settings on the exhale dial to assist with this.

In case those ten breaths seem too easy, you might need to boost the inhale and exhale dials separately. The numbers should be minimized if, for example, you haven’t used the Breather for a while due to health concerns.

The Breather steps should be performed twice per day, early in the morning and late at night, six days a week.

  • Remove the breather from the mouthpiece
  • To wash the breathing apparatus, use warm water and mild soap

What Customers Are Saying About The Breather

My mom received a diagnosis of COPD and her doctor wanted her to use inhalers twice a day. We ordered The Breather which she uses three times daily (3 sets of 10 breaths). She’s now able to be off of her inhalers.” – Nikkie

The Breather is a resistance based Inspiratory/Expiratory trainer with levels of resistance from 1-4/5. I bought this for my mother, who has asthma. She has used it and reports that it helps decrease her shortness of breath. It doesn’t look like much, but it seems to work for many people.” – Cynthia M.

What is PowerBreathe?

PowerBreathe

The PowerBreathe breathing trainer is an Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) device with a variety of uses for a wide range of people. PowerBreathe IMT is a scientifically proven breathing trainer that is useful for those who suffer from respiratory illness, for healthy individuals, and for athletes at all levels of competition.

How it works?

Devices like POWERbreathe function mechanically, like inhalers for asthmatics, but are unlike commercially available inhalers. Their purpose is to practice breathing. A resting position is the preferred mode of use of the device, that is, without simultaneous practice of a sport.

The breathing resistance can be reduced or increased by setting different intensities.

The device can also be used to reduce lactate production in the body immediately after exercise, according to the manufacturer. In high physical exertion, lactate is released. It contributes to sore muscles, among other things. With POWERbreathe, it should be possible to prevent or at least weaken the production of this endogenous substance. When used regularly, the device will improve lung function and therefore performance during sports.

Asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients use POWERbreathe to improve their respiratory function. When regularly used, the device helps the lungs to restore and maintain their natural function.

Additionally, this is meant to help certain occupational groups that are required to wear protective gear that makes breathing difficult (for example, firefighters and rescue workers) to strengthen their lungs.

How to use PowerBreathe?

Strengthen your diaphragm by using PowerBreathe Start with the lowest resistance when you use PowerBreathe for the first time.

  1. Lie or sit comfortably with your back supported (as directed by your physiotherapist).
  2. Maintain a relaxed posture.
  3. Make sure the resistance of the POWERBreathe device is at the lowest setting. You could train the wrong muscles or feel anxious if you set the resistance too high.
  4. Placing the mouthpiece whole into your mouth with the outer shield at the same level as your lips and your gums (with your teeth on the inner shield), firmly hold the handle grip in your hand.
    1. You should be able to seal the mouthpiece well, so that no part of the mouthpiece should be visible from the outside.
  5. Place the nose clip on the mouthpiece so that it covers both nostrils while keeping the mouthpiece in your mouth. You can pinch your nostrils together with your index finger and thumb instead (as if you were holding your nose) if you find this uncomfortable or claustrophobic.
    1. If steps 4 and 5 feel a little difficult at first because your breathing may feel different than usual, don’t be afraid to remove the mouthpiece and nose clip and repeat these steps until you feel more comfortable.
  6. Once you feel comfortable with the device, you can practice taking normal sized, relaxed breaths through it.
  7. It may be that you need to do more tummy breathing exercises without the PowerBreathe first, if you find that you are breathing more from your chest.
  8. Otherwise, if you can breathe normally with the device in your mouth, start by practicing with it little and often (as instructed by your physiotherapist).

Cleaning Process

We do not recommend that you boil your POWERbreathe and do not place it in the dishwasher, oven, or microwave for cleaning. To reduce the chance of bacteria growing on your POWERbreathe, you should clean it regularly to prevent any accumulation of dirt.

For about 10 minutes, soak your entire POWERbreathe unit, including the mouthpiece, in warm water several times a week. A gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush is often recommended for cleaning the mouthpiece.

Once the mouthpiece has been cleaned, it should be rinsed under running water. It should then be shook off and allowed to air dry. Follow the same procedure as above, but in the bowl of water use a mild denture cleaner instead of a cleansing tablet. Again, rinse it under running water after soaking for 10 minutes and let it air dry.
